Hi Peter,
I consider logo's as a special entity in which case I will create another image field called 'Logo'. As with logo's it's usually not desirable to crop them so I wont enable cropping for this image field. I'll create an image style where I scale on height (say 50 pixels) because logo's tent to vary in height and width.
If I want to give logo's some extra spacing I'll make sure that's done with some CSS in my theme.
